The Kern County Historical Society needs your help to replace the plaques for three of our County’s landmarks. We are currently accepting donations from the community to replace these missing plaques:

#539 Posey Station is commemorated as being a stopping point on the famed Butterfield Overland Stage route that ran from St. Louis, Missouri, to San Francisco, California.  Running twenty-four hours a day, the trip could be completed in as little as 25 days.  Kern County was one of the stopping points of this stage.

#631 Garces Baptismal Site records the first baptism in our San Joaquin Valley.   It was here, in Kern County, in 1776, when Padre Francisco Garces baptized a native Yokut inhabitant in Grizzly Gulch, west of Woody.

#660 Jedediah Strong Smith, a famed mountain man and early explorer is recognized for his travels through Kern County and is memorialized by this historical landmark.  Jedediah traveled throughout the west keeping a journal and making maps of his travels.
