The Kern Veterans Oral History Project started in the fall of 2012 at the KGET TV 17 Studios. The KVOHP is a coordinated project between the Kern County Historical Society, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter # 604, Bakersfield High School’s CEO Academy students, and KGET TV 17. The project is supported and advised by numerous veteran’s groups and organizations in Kern County. The goal is three-fold:

  1. Ask the veteran’s of Kern County to share their stories on their service to our country. Regardless of conflict, branch of service, or length of service, any stories that former service men and women are willing to share – we are willing to listen.
  2. Make the interviews available on the internet. Hour-long video is now accepted at Youtube.com. The interviews would come under the protection of the Kern County Historical Society, but uploaded by the Kern High School District to the internet. (If a veteran wishes not to make their interview immediately available on the internet, arrangements can be made.
  3. Send a copy of the interview to the Library of Congress Veteran History Project. The Library of Congress is gathering thousands of interviews to keep the history of America alive. We want to make sure the Kern County veterans are represented.

So how does it work?

Veterans or family and friends of a veteran, can email Ken Hooper, a historical society member and coordinator of the KVOHP, to schedule an appointment. The interviews are conducted at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm in the 2nd floor studio of KGET TV 17 on every Wednesday of the month. The cameraman/producer is from KGET TV 17 and the interviewer is from the community. We have used students majoring in history from Cal State Bakersfield, members of the Kern County Historical Society, and members of community as well as fellow veterans to conduct the interviews.

Would you like to conduct interviews? Ken Hooper can conduct some simple training and provide basic questions, guidelines, and support.

What do you do when you arrive at KGET TV 17 studios?

Arrive at your assigned time at the front door to the KGET TV 17 studio. People are ‘buzzed’ into the studio, so stand there for a moment and the receptionist will buzz you inside. Tell the receptionist you are there to participate in the oral history interviews for the veterans and they will lead you to the studio. (If needed, there is an elevator to the second floor.) A plastic storage box with all the paper work needed to complete the interviews in the interviewing room. Please fill out all the release forms and paperwork. Mike Trihey will be your contact person at KGET TV 17.

Questions? Please email Ken Hooper at kchs1931@gmail.com to schedule an appointment or ask any questions.
