Bakersfield Plaque Project
The Kern County Historical Society, in partnership with the City of Bakersfield’s Historic Preservation Commission, was generously granted $17,252 from the Bakersfield Californian Foundation in the spring of 2012 to place plaques on downtown historic buildings.
The committee of volunteers has almost completed an extensive and authentic research in writing twenty different narratives of buildings designated to receive plaques. The goal is to incorporate the history of the building with the role it has played in local history.
Included in this endeavor will be the creation of high-quality brochures and walking maps of downtown Bakersfield. The new plaques — similar in size and wording as the plaques already in place downtown — will show the building’s historic name, architect or architects, architectural style, builder, and year of construction, as well as other historical details.
Not all historic information can be contained on the metal plaque. A phase II project is planned that will contain online images, articles, and narratives intended to enhance the importance of the structure and the history of Bakersfield.
We are open to new historic information or other suggestions that the public may have related to the buildings.
The public is welcome to proof read our narratives. Proofreading can involve checking for grammatical, spelling, mechanical, and historical errors.
